The Chitresh Das Dance Company & Chhandam School of Kathak is an internationally renowned nonprofit arts organization that is dedicated to the education, promotion, and preservation of Kathak dance and classical Indian art and culture.
The award-winning Chitresh Das Dance Company is a visionary voice and trailblazing leader in Indian classical dance comprised of some of the most powerful women to emerge from today’s generation of Kathak artists. Company members exemplify Pandit Chitresh Das’ emphasis on the technical, graceful, and dramatic aspects of Kathak dance, each an established soloist in her own right. CDDC produces traditional, innovative, and relevant work that is evocative and commanding, bringing both the richness of ancient India and a fiery, contemporary sensibility.
The Chhandam School of Kathak is a world-class academy dedicated to deep cultural education through the Kathak tradition. Founded in Northern California in 1980, it is the largest classical Indian dance institution in North America. In addition, it has major affiliate centers run by Pandit Das’ disciples in India, Boston, Los Angeles and Toronto.
Chhandam emphasizes Pandit Das’ renowned holistic pedagogy and formalized curriculum for Kathak that has influenced dancers and artists worldwide. Students of all ages undergo extensive training in technique, rhythmical math (taal), improvisation, storytelling, classical Indian music, Indian history, philosophy, and etiquette. Through this training, students develop discipline, awareness, focus, respect, character, and overall life training.
Chhandam offers formal examinations, intensive dance and music immersion programs, annual community student performance showcases, teacher training, and an opportunity for youth to be part of its elite pre-professional Kathak youth company and leadership program, performing at prestigious festivals and venues.
